Pet friendly properties a rare breed

By Amber O'Brien

Australians are a pet loving lot, but we haven’t reconciled that with our love of property.

The Animal Health Alliance reports that there are an estimated 25 million pets in Australia (2 million more paws than people), with 5 million of Australia’s 7.6 million households playing home to a critter of some kind. At 63%, Australia has one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world.

But if you’re a renter, it’s hard to find a place accepting of your furry family members.

We’ve run the numbers and found that nationally, just 5% of active rental listings are considered pet-friendly.*

The NT seems to be more generous (or realistic?) when it comes to pets, with the highest percentage of rentals listings that are pet friendly (9.6%). Victoria has the lowest number of listings at 1.8%.

However we also noticed that searches for pet-friendly apartments aren’t through the roof – perhaps because they’re much more likely to get “No results” than a standard search.*

Here’s how many are searching for pet friendly properties state by state: Internal Data, October 2013 (active listings)

** April – September 2013 (rental searches)
